Questions covered in this guide
Confirm a real destination
GAF describes collecting and processing tear-off shingles for reuse in manufacturing and other applications. The existence of that program does not establish that a recycler will accept your project’s material or that a nearby hauling route participates.
Ask before the dumpster arrives
Tell the roofer if recycling is a project preference and ask whether they can identify a receiving facility for the actual material. Request confirmation of what that facility accepts and how the load must be handled. Keep questions about unusual or suspect materials for the qualified contractor and appropriate facility. Do not assume mixed demolition debris can be treated the same as a separated asphalt-shingle load.
Build a disposal decision sheet
Record the proposed destination, material accepted, hauling responsibility, any separation arrangement, and the receipt or other record you will receive. Add a fallback destination if recycling is unavailable after the material is assessed. Ask for any additional hauling or sorting cost in the written proposal. If a contractor advertises recycling, request a project-specific explanation rather than treating a general logo or sustainability statement as proof that your debris will be recycled.
Close out the claim with records
Retain the hauling or receiving documentation the contractor agreed to provide. If the destination changes, ask for the reason and the revised disposal record. Keep the distinction between recycled-content new products and recycling the old roof; they are separate questions. The national roofing calculator does not verify waste diversion or include every local handling cost. Choose an achievable, documented disposal plan before tear-off, then describe the outcome according to the records actually received rather than an assumed environmental benefit.
Putting it into practice
The homeowner secures a receiving destination, acceptance conditions, and a disposal record before tear-off. The guide distinguishes an available manufacturer recycling program from proof that an individual project’s debris was diverted.
