Start with the designation process

FORTIFIED describes independent evaluation and documentation, along with features beyond the visible roof covering such as deck attachment and sealing. Buying a particular shingle does not by itself complete that process or establish a designation.

Arrange the handoff before work is concealed

Ask the evaluator and roofer to explain their respective responsibilities before scheduling tear-off. Request a list of the evidence they expect to collect and the points when coordination is needed. Identify who will contact whom if the schedule changes. If a contractor says the roof will be FORTIFIED, ask what that means in the agreement and who is responsible for obtaining and delivering the resulting documentation.

Prepare a designation tracking worksheet

Create rows for evaluator engagement, roof scope review, required project observations, documentation submission, questions or corrections, and final designation record. Put a name and status beside each row. Add a place for the current standard or program document the evaluator says applies. Do not mark a row complete simply because materials have arrived or the visible roof is finished. Keep photographs organized by the evaluator’s requested evidence rather than by your own assumptions about what proves compliance.

Budget and verify the actual outcome

Ask for evaluation and any additional roof work to be identified clearly in the proposal. Treat any insurer incentive as a separate question for your insurer, with a written response for your property. The national calculator does not include every designation-related service or predict an insurance benefit. At closeout, obtain the actual program record and keep it with the roof contract. Installation completion, submission, and designation should each have their own confirmed status.

Putting it into practice

The worksheet tracks the evaluator, construction evidence, submission, and designation as separate milestones. It makes the process reviewable before concealed work and avoids mistaking a product purchase for a completed designation.
