Ask which test the claim names
IBHS distinguishes its hail-performance testing from classifications such as UL 2218 and FM 4473. A phrase like impact resistant needs an identified test and product; it is not a promise that a roof cannot suffer storm damage.
Keep the product identity exact
Request the manufacturer, full shingle line, and the current document supporting the stated classification. Ask the contractor whether the proposed accessories have separate requirements. If a brochure shows several product lines, mark the one included in your proposal. Do not transfer a rating from a similar name or a photograph. When comparing independent research, check that the tested product is the product actually available for your order and that the information is current.
Build a rating comparison card
Use rows for product name, test standard, classification, document date, and the contractor’s explanation of what the test does and does not establish. Leave a separate space for any insurer response you obtain about that exact product. Ask your insurer directly if you are considering a coverage or premium implication; do not put an assumed discount into the project budget. The roofing salesperson’s statement and the insurer’s written answer should remain separate records.
Make the choice without a damage guarantee
Compare the documented product options alongside installation scope and your priorities. Ask how a future suspected hail problem would be inspected and which photographs or records you should retain. A national roof range cannot estimate a product-specific upgrade or predict a claim outcome. Treat the impact classification as one piece of evidence, then decide using a complete proposal that names both the selected product and the relevant test documentation.
Putting it into practice
The rating card keeps product identity, laboratory classification, independent research, and insurer response in separate fields. It prevents a useful impact label from becoming an unsupported storm or insurance guarantee.
