Questions covered in this guide

Label the quantities first

GAF defines a roofing square as 100 square feet of roof area and explains that bundle coverage varies by shingle product. A bid showing squares and another showing bundles cannot be compared by the numbers alone. Ask each roofer to identify measured roof surface, the material allowance and the final order quantity separately.

Use a simple reconciliation

For a hypothetical roof with 2,000 square feet of measured surface, the area is 20 squares. If a bidder proposes a 10 percent material allowance for that example, the material basis becomes 22 squares before product-specific bundle rounding. The 10 percent is an illustration, not a recommendation for your roof. Ask the bidder to explain the actual allowance and how the selected product turns that quantity into an order.

Keep accessories visible

Ask how starter material, hip and ridge pieces and other separately specified components appear in the quote. Mark whether they are separate lines or already included in a package. If two bidders report different measured areas, resolve the measurement basis before arguing about the allowance. Request a labeled roof diagram and an explanation of which sections were included. Do not climb onto the roof to try to settle the difference yourself.

Enter the appropriate area in the calculator

The roofing tool asks for roof surface or a clearly identified footprint conversion; an ordered material quantity is a different number. Avoid entering allowance-inflated squares as though they were measured surface and then adding the same allowance again elsewhere. Ask whether any supplied unit price applies to measured area or ordered material before using it. Save the measured area, allowance explanation and product coverage with the proposal so the calculation can be checked when the bid changes.

Putting it into practice

The original 2,000-square-foot example reconciles measured surface with a hypothetical material allowance and identifies the point where product-specific rounding enters. It prevents ordered quantities from being mistaken for the calculator area.
