Questions covered in this guide
Ask for the locations, not just the word flashing
GAF's technical bulletin describes metal flashing at roof junctions, edges and penetrations as part of directing water away from the structure. On your proposal, ask the roofer to identify the relevant locations in plain language: wall meeting roof, chimney, valley or pipe opening. A labeled photograph taken by the contractor can make the discussion easier without requiring you to access the roof.
Mark replace, reuse or inspect first
Give each location one of those three entries. GAF recommends replacement whenever possible and describes reuse as conditional on qualified inspection, condition and compatibility with the new shingles. That is manufacturer guidance, not a blanket decision for every roof. If reuse is proposed, ask for the reason and the applicable product or installation documentation.
Decide how a change will be handled
Ask what happens if removal damages a piece that was expected to remain or reveals an incompatible detail. Record who will document the finding, how the added scope will be priced and when your authorization will be requested. Ask whether adjacent wall or trim work is included when access is needed. Keep those responsibilities beside the location list so the original flashing allowance does not silently become an open-ended repair instruction.
Save the final scope with the roof documents
After the proposal is settled, keep the location list, photographs and written scope together. Ask the contractor to note any accepted changes in the completion record and identify the coverage that applies to the actual work. The roofing calculator does not price each flashing detail or determine reuse suitability. Use a supplied project range that includes the agreed work, and leave unresolved repairs clearly labeled until the roofer can explain them.
Putting it into practice
The location list turns a broad flashing allowance into explicit replace/reuse/inspect decisions. A documented change process addresses damage during removal and the responsibility for adjacent finish work.
