Questions covered in this guide
Identify the component you will not easily see
GAF describes starter strips as a separate system component with factory-positioned sealant. The main shingle sample does not identify this part of the proposed roof, so ask the installer to include it in the product schedule.
Discuss edges before delivery
Ask the roofer to show, on a simple drawing, which roof edges are included in their starter-strip scope. Have them identify the product and the manufacturer instructions supporting its use with your chosen shingles. If the proposal uses generic language such as complete roofing system, request an accompanying component list. The purpose is to understand the order and scope, not to direct fastening or installation from a homeowner sketch.
Create an edge-component record
Use rows for the main shingle, starter product, related edge metal, and any edge section treated differently. Record the contractor’s product identifiers and the document reference for each. Ask for delivery labels or progress photographs that help identify materials actually used. Keep a separate column for professional verification because a photograph of a bundle does not prove that the right material was installed at every required location.
Resolve a missing or changed item
If one proposal omits starter strips while another lists them, ask each contractor to explain the intended assembly before comparing prices. Do not assume the cheaper quote is incomplete, or that the longer list proves correct workmanship, without that explanation. Require an updated component record when products change. The national roofing calculator does not validate a system specification or a warranty package. Retain the final material list so future service conversations can refer to the installed roof instead of a generic shingle name.
Putting it into practice
The page makes a concealed edge component identifiable in the material schedule. Delivery records and professional verification remain separate, preventing a homeowner from mistaking bundle photographs for installation proof.
