Questions covered in this guide

Identify who owes the promise

Ask for the actual warranty documents for the proposed installation. Record the issuer beside each promise: manufacturer, installer or another named party. GAF distinguishes material coverage from contractor workmanship coverage and describes enhanced options with additional conditions. A large number of years on a sales sheet does not answer who handles a particular problem.

Read the claim process as well as the term

Ask who receives a claim, what documentation must be retained, and who determines whether the cause is covered. Record any difference between material replacement, labor and correction of installation errors. Treat unanswered questions as open items for the contractor, rather than filling them with assumptions from another manufacturer's warranty.

Compare the complete requirements

Request the exact products and accessories required for the offered coverage, any registration step, who completes it, and what proof you receive. Ask about transfer if the house is sold, maintenance obligations, exclusions and any charge for an enhanced option. These are questions to resolve from the documents, not statements that every warranty has the same conditions.

Keep the choice tied to the project

Make a short table with issuer, covered problem, covered expense, term and unresolved question. Save a copy with the signed scope and installation records. A warranty is one part of a roof decision, alongside the condition assessment and proposed work. Our roof planning tool does not value warranties or predict a claim outcome; use it to organize the project budget while the written documents answer coverage questions.

Putting it into practice

Comparing warranty issuers and covered expenses prevents a duration-only comparison. The proposed table makes unanswered conditions visible without assuming that any specific warranty will cover a future problem.
